You are what you eat: optimizing food intake based on your genes

The importance of a scientific and tailored diet

Most people pursue good dietary habits to develop strong, healthy, and fit bodies. Popular health programs promise benefits like weight loss and management, decreased risk for heart disease and other serious ailments, as well as overall physical, mental, and emotional wellness.

While it’s beneficial to consume healthy meals every day, it’s always better to first determine what your body really needs and create a plan to address your unique genetic make-up. This is where nutrigenomics—the study of genes and how they affect your reaction to certain food compounds and chemicals—can help.

Understanding food sensitivity

With advanced genetic technology, scientists can determine how your bodies absorb and process nutrients, vitamins, and other complex substances. For instance, if your body needs help in absorbing Vitamin B, a particular diet or supplement may be recommended based on the findings.

Nutrigenomics can also point out your biological sensitivity to certain micronutrients. When a carbohydrate-sensitive individual eats white rice, for example, this person may experience a greater spike in blood sugar for a longer period than a non-sensitive person. A fat-sensitive individual, on the other hand, may be genetically predisposed to absorb the compound quicker than others. If you are not aware of your sensitivity to these micronutrients, you may have increased risks for physical conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. You may also find it difficult to lose weight.

Treat Your Special Man at Diana Stalder this Father’s Day

The rainy season is coming; it notifies the end of the summer season. Did you know that wet and humid weather is known for aggravating skin problems? The high humidity level tends to aggravate clogged pores, which in turn causes an increase in sebum production. The excess oil on the skin surface traps dirt and dust and is a breeding ground for bacteria, which leads to skin flare-ups.

The rainy season also makes your skin oilier than it already is. You need to get rid of all that oiliness and also prevent the infections from forming up. Don’t worry! Diana Stalder can help you in every step of the way.

5 REASONS TO GO FOR GREEN BUILDING

Going green is becoming a new way of life. The whole world seems to be more conscious about being less harmful to the environment, and it’s no different in the Philippines.

When Filipinos talk about “going green”, it’s usually about recycling, choosing organic food, or using less electricity or fuel at home or on the road. Green building uses the same principles. Green materials are constructed and developed through a sustainable supply chain, resulting in building materials that aren’t made with environmentally harmful chemicals. They also lessen construction waste by using materials that are sustainable and degrade less over time.

Building your eco-friendly home might sound tricky, but going green for the house of your dreams has a much bigger pay off than you might think. Here are five reasons to go for green building:

Marriott Manila is known to be a leader in the hospitality industry, not only in the business facet, but also in corporate social responsibility. In their annual Brigada Eskwela participation, Marriott launches a Hospitality Training Center in the Philippine School for the Deaf. The development is part of the long-term partnership of the hotel and school to achieve impactful and sustainable results for the kids with disabilities.

The two-story facility is a venue for the new housekeeping course for their senior high students. Who else is best to mentor them than Marriott associates themselves; so the hotel donated furniture for the mock-up room, such as rollaways beds, beddings, sofas and television set. They conducted bed making demonstration and have scheduled other housekeeping lessons in the coming months. But before polishing the interiors, the hotel has been involved in the reconstruction of the building and at the Brigada Eskwela activity, 60 associates volunteered for the final retouches on painting and cleaning the exteriors and corners to look good as new.
